In 1991 Alcan supported a visit by SIHS to what was the smallest and oldest aluminium smelter in the world, at Kinlochleven, as it was starting the process of transitioning to other uses. Now the carbon silos house the “Ice Factor”. The fascinating company town and beautiful hydro-electric power station of 1907 is connected to a vast water catchment area managed by the company, taking water also to the larger Lochaber Aluminium Smelter on the slopes of Ben Nevis, vantage point for spectacular views over Fort William towards Corpach.
